OPEN DISCLOSURE

Description:

The National Honor Society was founded in 1921 and has been established to

“encourage academic achievement while also developing other characteristics essential to citizens in democracy” (National Honor Society Handbook, 1997).

The organization focuses on scholarship, character, service and leadership. Students will have the opportunity to participate in chapter meetings, service projects, and occasional field trips to enhance their experience in the National Honor Society and SLSPA. Activities or meetings may occur during the school day, during lunch, or in the evening.

Requirements:

  • Sophomore, Junior, and Senior candidates must have cumulative GPA of 3.50 in order to become a member of the SLSPA Chapter of the National Honor Society. 
  • Complete an application and pay yearly dues of $10.00. (Dues paid to Kim in SLSPA Main Office)
  • Complete and document a minimum of 6 hours of community services hours per term. All community service hours must be documented on the proper form, and family members are not eligible to sign off on community service hours for students.
  •  Attend at least 60% of all meetings throughout the year.
  • Participate in 60% of NHS sponsored service projects and socials.


IF YOU TURN IN YOUR HOURS LATE- THE FOLLOWING TERM YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO COMPLETE 8 HOURS. ALL FORMS WILL BE PICKED UP AND DATED THE DAY AFTER THE TERM ENDS.

SENIORS:

If you want to wear the cowl for graduation, you must be a member in good standing. This includes application completed, fees paid, hours turned in on time, attend meetings and participated in the NHS projects and socials.

Need some service hours for NHS? Check out Senior Companions!
  • Do hospice volunteer work by performing/singing music in elderly's homes or assist in any way you can (about 30-45 mins).
  • Flexible schedule and can be done individually or in groups.
  • If performing for the elderly, you will need to bring your own instrument but they do have an electronic keyboard for use.
  • Fun, casual, and snacks are provided to students. 
  • Students are accompanied by Elizabeth & John Peake.
  • Great opportunity to use for service hours or seat time! (Must obtain signature from John or Elizabeth and turn into Cierra to receive hours)
